Rivian sets ambitious timeline for supervised autonomous driving

Rivian plans to introduce supervised point-to-point autonomous driving later this year on its second-generation vehicles. The feature aims to match capabilities similar to those offered by Tesla.

Chief executive RJ Scaringe detailed the plans during recent comments on the company's progress.

"Later this year, we’ll have full supervised point-to-point, which would be very similar like Tesla’s FSD," he said. The rollout will cover all Gen two models and the upcoming R2 SUV.

Scaringe outlined further steps, with unsupervised operation targeted for next year and fully driverless capability by 2028. He noted that driverless mode could enable new uses such as airport drop-offs and school pickups.

The company has chosen to partner with Uber for robotaxi services rather than build its own network. It intends to deploy 50,000 robotaxi versions of the R2 through the Uber platform.

Following the first Cybercab production unit in February, Tesla released a video on April 23 showing multiple steerless robotaxis rolling off the line and driving autonomously to the outbound lot. This footage underscores rapid progress toward volume production amid broader autonomous driving advancements.

Tesla has added five unsupervised Model Y robotaxis to its Texas operations as of April 29, 2026, bringing totals to 19 in Austin, three in Dallas, and two in Houston—for 24 vehicles overall. The expansion, tracked by independent monitors and reported by Sawyer Merritt, advances the program beyond its initial supervised Austin pilot launched in 2025.
