SF Power Outage Update: PG&E Restores Most Power as Waymo Cars Remain Stranded

Following Saturday's substation fire that caused a widespread San Francisco power outage, PG&E has restored service to about 110,000 of 130,000 affected customers by Sunday morning. Waymo autonomous vehicles continue to face challenges at darkened intersections, keeping Bay Area ride-hailing suspended.

Power crews restored electricity to approximately 110,000 customers overnight, with remaining outages in the Presidio, Richmond District, Golden Gate Park, and parts of downtown. The outage originated from a fire at a PG&E substation, disabling traffic lights and stranding Waymo self-driving taxis, as captured in social media videos showing vehicles halted mid-intersection with hazard lights flashing.

Waymo's Driver system, which "responds to signs and signals, like traffic light colors and temporary stop signs," per the company's website, struggled with the powerless signals. Operations remain paused Bay Area-wide. "We have temporarily suspended our ride-hailing services... and are hopeful to bring our services back online soon," spokesperson Suzanne Philion said.

The incident highlights autonomous vehicle limitations during infrastructure failures, especially as Tesla's robotaxis reportedly navigated unaffected, per Elon Musk's X post.

The disruption affected thousands of residents and clogged traffic, as shown in social media videos. Tesla CEO Elon Musk highlighted that his company's robotaxis operated unaffected.

Tesla shares remained under pressure near $475 after Friday's 2.1% drop, as a Waymo power outage in San Francisco reignited regulatory debates on autonomous emergency responses, impacting perceptions of Tesla's robotaxi plans. Positive energy storage news and mixed delivery forecasts provide counterbalance ahead of January 2 figures.

Alphabet's Waymo has begun offering fully autonomous rides to San Francisco International Airport, marking the third major airport in its network. The service launches with a select group of riders and pickups limited to the Rental Car Center, with plans for broader access soon. This expansion comes amid scrutiny from a recent incident involving a child pedestrian in Santa Monica.

New NHTSA data reveals Tesla's Austin robotaxi fleet crashing nine times more frequently than human drivers through November 2025, even with safety monitors. As prior coverage noted skepticism over unfulfilled unsupervised ride promises post-January storm, the company continues supervised operations, underscoring persistent safety hurdles.

Tesla's Cybercab, an autonomous vehicle, was spotted testing on public roads in Los Altos, California, marking its first such appearance. A person occupied the driver's seat during the test, conducted near the company's Engineering HQ. This sighting aligns with Tesla's ongoing advancements in Full Self-Driving technology.

The Koedoespoort Substation in Tshwane has failed again, extending power outages in east Pretoria that began last month. Residents in areas like Faerie Glen and Lynnwood remain without electricity as repair teams work to restore supply. City officials report progress on cable repairs but caution that full restoration may take time.
