São Paulo metro workers announce strike for May 13

The São Paulo Metro Workers Union has scheduled a 24-hour strike for Wednesday, May 13. The final decision depends on a workers' assembly set for May 12. The category demands a public hiring contest and improved working conditions.

The union announced the strike after an impasse in negotiations with Metro management and the state government. Lines 1-blue, 2-green, 3-red, and 15-silver will halt if the assembly approves the stoppage. The remaining lines operated by private concessionaires will not be affected.

The main demand is a public hiring contest to replenish staff, which has been cut in half over the past ten years. There are currently 5,663 employees. Union president Camila Lisboa noted that work overload has contributed to high rates of illness among workers.

Metro workers also seek equal pay for identical roles, talks on profit-sharing participation, and health plan adjustments. The assembly will take place at the union headquarters in the Belém neighborhood. Metro stated it will await the meeting's outcome before commenting.
