Scary Movie tops box office as Masters of the Universe stumbles

Scary Movie returned to theaters with its first installment in 13 years and the first in 25 years featuring a Wayans family member in charge. The comedy outperformed expectations by drawing audiences despite concerns that its core fans had aged out. Brent Lang of Variety noted the surprise success during a Daily Variety podcast. He said the film benefited from ongoing popularity of horror movies and a desire for R-rated comedies. Masters of the Universe opened to less than 30 million dollars after costing 200 million dollars to produce. The result marked a significant drop from the performance of Barbie in 2023. Amazon MGM Studios is expected to view the outcome differently because of its streaming service. Lang observed that the property may no longer hold strong appeal for younger viewers.
