Sonora activates cancer-fighting linear accelerator and announces four hospital projects

Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño announced the operation of a high-tech linear accelerator at Sonora's State Oncology Center, with an 80 million peso investment, starting this Thursday, April 16. The equipment will double radiotherapy sessions from 11,000 to 22,000 annually and cut wait times from six months to one month, free through IMSS-Bienestar. Four priority hospital infrastructure projects were also unveiled.

In a virtual appearance at President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's morning briefing, Governor Durazo, alongside IMSS-Bienestar director Alejandro Svarch, unveiled the linear accelerator, the most advanced in northwest Mexico. "What makes it historic is that this service is totally free, capacity increases to 22,000 therapy sessions, and wait times drop from six months to one," Durazo emphasized.

Hospital projects include building the Río Sonora Regional Hospital in Ures with 15 specialties, addressing communities hit by the 2014 chemical spill. The Miguel Alemán Community Hospital will serve farmworkers.

The Cruz del Norte Mental Health Unit, without investment for over 45 years, will undergo full modernization, and the State Children's Hospital (HIES) will be restructured to enhance care for children and adolescents. These steps bolster Sonora's health system with a humanistic, universal focus.
