Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula is facing a contempt of court case after the civil society group Vocal Africa accused him of defying orders barring him from political campaigning.
Interim orders issued by the High Court on July 8 barred Wetang’ula and Senate Speaker Amason Kingi from using their offices to prepare or lead political campaigns until the main case is decided.
Vocal Africa claims that between July 10 and July 12 Wetang’ula addressed rallies in Narok North, Sirisia, Matungu, Kabuchai and Webuye East and urged residents to support President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
Judge David Mburu said on Monday that the application is urgent and scheduled the matter for further directions on July 16.
