Suspect in Stade case dies by suicide in custody

Fatih Khan G. took his own life in Bremervörde prison. The Lower Saxony Justice Ministry confirmed suicide with no indication of third-party involvement.

The 45-year-old Fatih Khan G. from Garbsen was found dead in his cell on Tuesday morning around 6 a.m. Staff at Bremervörde prison discovered during a routine check that the inmate no longer had body temperature. A doctor later confirmed he had strangled himself.

G. had been suspected of shooting six people at a youth welfare facility in Stade at the end of June. Prosecutors in Stade had been investigating him for six counts of murder. The case against him was closed upon his death.

Investigations against the child's mother and the godmother, who allegedly drove the getaway car, continue. Neither faces urgent suspicion. Indications of suicide risk had existed, yet the death occurred anyway.
