Swedish police set airspace restrictions and drone surveillance for Uppsala Walpurgis

The Swedish Police Authority has applied for a temporary restricted airspace over parts of Walpurgis Night celebrations in Uppsala from 8:00 a.m. on April 30 to 3:00 a.m. on May 1, 2026. It has also decided on drone camera surveillance in Uppsala center and at Gamla Uppsala högar to prevent crimes and maintain public order. The measures aim to enhance safety during the event.

The Swedish Police Authority announces a temporary restricted airspace, or R-area, over parts of the Walpurgis Night celebrations. The area applies from 8:00 a.m. on April 30, 2026, to 3:00 a.m. on May 1, 2026, and extends up to 1500 feet. Police will fly UAS, or drones, beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) within the area for camera surveillance.

The R-area imposes limits on flying, such as drones, by other actors without permission. It provides police with legal support to intervene against unauthorized flights, though it is not a physical barrier. Information is published via NOTAM for pilots and drone operators, and police urge everyone to check the Swedish Transport Agency's drone map.

Camera surveillance will be conducted in Uppsala Center from 8:00 a.m. on April 30 to 6:00 a.m. on May 1, 2026, and at Gamla Uppsala högar from 6:00 p.m. on April 30 to 5:00 a.m. on May 1, 2026. The purpose is to prevent and detect criminal activity, investigate crimes, and maintain public order and safety. Drones fly at high altitudes without person identification and do not film into homes.
