Ted Turner, the media mogul who owned the Atlanta Braves and brought the team to national audiences through TBS, died on Wednesday at the age of 87. His ownership transformed the franchise during one of its most successful eras.
Turner never played baseball but left an indelible mark on the sport as owner of the Braves from 1976 to 2007. He purchased the team and used his satellite television network to air games nationwide, earning the club the nickname America’s Team. The Braves enjoyed a record 14 consecutive division titles from 1991 to 2005 and won the 1995 World Series under his stewardship.
