Ten students from Alliance High School in Kikuyu have been arrested in connection with a fire that destroyed a mattress storage facility on Wednesday night.
Initial investigations indicate the students may have communicated with outsiders to plan the unrest. Security cameras recorded two students setting the store ablaze while eight others were involved in the planning. Board chairman Sam Ncheeri said some students wanted to end studies and return home before the scheduled time. The school was temporarily closed and parents were asked to collect their children. Central Region Education Director Sabina Aroni said the students may have been influenced by peers from other schools. Basic Education Secretary Professor Julius Bitok stressed that schools will not close early despite incidents of unrest.
