Verstappen laughs at McLaren's failed Canadian GP tyre gamble

Max Verstappen mocked McLaren after the team started the Canadian Grand Prix on intermediate tyres while other frontrunners chose slicks. The decision backfired as the track dried, leading to early pit stops for both McLaren drivers.

McLaren was the only leading team to begin Sunday's race on intermediates in Montreal. Oscar Piastri pitted at the end of lap one for mediums, and Lando Norris followed on lap two after briefly taking the lead at the start. Norris later retired with a gearbox issue, while Piastri finished 11th after receiving a 10-second penalty for a collision with Alex Albon.

Lando Norris secured McLaren's first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season by winning the Miami Grand Prix sprint race. Teammate Oscar Piastri finished second, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc taking third in the 19-lap event at Hard Rock Stadium. The result marks the first non-Mercedes win after their early-season dominance.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said the team lacked the pace to challenge for the podium in the Canadian Grand Prix even without its tyre strategy and reliability problems. The squad struggled particularly in the cold conditions at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.

Lando Norris put a difficult Canadian Grand Prix behind him by meeting former teammate Daniel Ricciardo and Conor Daly after the Indianapolis 500. McLaren started both its drivers on intermediate tyres at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, a decision that proved costly when rain failed to materialise.

Red Bull Racing secured its first podium of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. The result followed a challenging qualifying session where Max Verstappen placed sixth and voiced concerns over the team's set-up decisions.

Lando Norris qualified eighth for the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, his worst grid position of the season. The McLaren driver attributed the result to ongoing issues with his car's front-end feel and driveability.

Isack Hadjar described his qualifying lap as disappointing despite finishing just 0.028 seconds behind Max Verstappen at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Following Charles Leclerc's 20-second penalty drop to eighth at the 2026 F1 Miami GP (see earlier coverage), Max Verstappen and George Russell have also been summoned to FIA stewards over potential infractions from the race's chaotic finale. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli won ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris, with Oscar Piastri third.
