VW unveils Jetta X as affordable EV at Beijing Auto Show

Volkswagen presented a concept vehicle from its Jetta sub-brand at the Beijing Auto Show: the electric compact SUV Jetta X priced at around 10,000 euros. The model aims to reclaim lost market share against rivals like BYD and Toyota. It is developed exclusively for the Chinese market.

The Beijing Auto Show, the world's largest auto fair of the year, officially starts on Friday. On Tuesday evening local time, Volkswagen already showcased its premiere in Beijing: the Jetta X, a concept for a new generation of affordable electrics in the entry segment.

The compact SUV's most striking feature is its price of just over 10,000 euros – the lowest for any EV from the VW group. It will not be available in Europe, as it was fully developed in China for the local market.

CEO Oliver Blume and China head Ralf Brandstätter are making a bold bet. Instead of pitting the core Volkswagen brand against fierce price competition, the Jetta sub-brand will handle the electric entry-level segment going forward.

Jetta has been a standalone sub-brand in China since 2019. The highly ambitious sales targets aim to recover lost shares in the world's largest car market.

At the Auto China 2026 in Beijing, Chinese firms like BYD and Geely unveiled advanced electric vehicles with up to 950 km range and fast charging. Some models could reach Mexico, though they target the Chinese market primarily. The US has blocked Chinese car sales.
