Yellowstone spinoff Marshals features Kayce Dutton's new journey

The CBS spinoff series Marshals continues the story of Yellowstone's Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, who faces tragedy after his wife Monica's death from cancer. Creator Spencer Hudnut explains the narrative shift to start Kayce's hero journey in sorrow. New episodes air weekly on Sundays.

In the Yellowstone spinoff Marshals, Kayce Dutton leaves the family ranch behind to join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in Montana, drawing on his experience as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to deliver justice. The series begins with Kayce, portrayed by Luke Grimes, dealing with the loss of his wife Monica, played by Kelsey Asbille, who dies of cancer. This contrasts with Yellowstone's finale, where Kayce rides off happily with Monica and their son Tate, played by Brecken Merrill.

Creator and executive producer Spencer Hudnut stated, "Any hero's journey needs to begin in tragedy." He added, "In 'Yellowstone,' Kayce and Monica had such a happy ending. We needed to turn his world upside down."

The premiere episode shows Kayce telling Monica he is "changing paths" by joining the U.S. Marshals to find "a new beginning for me and Tate." The next installment, titled "Zone of Death," airs on Sunday, March 8, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. In this episode, Kayce attempts to embrace his new life during a Marshals operation to prevent a domestic terror attack, which uncovers buried secrets from his Dutton family past. He also works to build relationships with his new teammates.

Marshals airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the CBS Television Network and streams on Paramount+, available immediately for Premium subscribers and the following day for Essential plan users. The cast includes Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, Arielle Kebbel as Belle, Ash Santos as Andrea, Tatanka Means as Miles, Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater, and Mo Brings Plenty as Mo.

The CBS series Marshals, a Yellowstone spin-off, opened with the offscreen death of Monica Dutton from cancer. The move reportedly stems from a complex streaming rights agreement involving Peacock and Paramount.

Marshals Season 1 Episode 10, aired May 3 on CBS, ties back to Yellowstone with escaped prisoner Neil Lamb, a former Dutton ranch hand. Kayce tracks him in a tense forest standoff, while Belle confronts her criminal mother, and Cal saves teammate Garrett from a fire amid revelations of their shared SEAL past.

In Marshals season 1 episode 8 (April 19), Randall Clegg—debuted earlier as Kayce Dutton's vengeful antagonist—returned with a vengeance, ambushing and kidnapping Marshal Andrea. The episode also brought bad news for Cal via a doctor's diagnosis, confirmed Miles and Maddie's relationship, and introduced troubled ex-SEAL Garrett, ending on a cliffhanger rescue.

The March 29 episode of CBS's Marshals advanced ties between Cal's team and the Broken Rock reservation amid a hunt for human traffickers. The story concluded with a tense cliffhanger after a shootout left the missing girls unaccounted for. Actor Mo Brings Plenty hopes the plot serves as a wake-up call on real-world reservation issues.

In Episode 9 of CBS's 'Marshals,' Riley Green reprised his role as Garrett, performing his new single 'My Way' at a campfire in East Camp. The country star discussed how the song's themes of love and lost time mirror Kayce Dutton's grief over his late wife Monica, building on his acting debut in Episode 8 (part of our Riley Green on Marshals coverage).
