Yellowstone spinoff Marshals features Kayce Dutton's new journey

The CBS spinoff series Marshals continues the story of Yellowstone's Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, who faces tragedy after his wife Monica's death from cancer. Creator Spencer Hudnut explains the narrative shift to start Kayce's hero journey in sorrow. New episodes air weekly on Sundays.

In the Yellowstone spinoff Marshals, Kayce Dutton leaves the family ranch behind to join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in Montana, drawing on his experience as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to deliver justice. The series begins with Kayce, portrayed by Luke Grimes, dealing with the loss of his wife Monica, played by Kelsey Asbille, who dies of cancer. This contrasts with Yellowstone's finale, where Kayce rides off happily with Monica and their son Tate, played by Brecken Merrill.

Creator and executive producer Spencer Hudnut stated, "Any hero's journey needs to begin in tragedy." He added, "In 'Yellowstone,' Kayce and Monica had such a happy ending. We needed to turn his world upside down."

The premiere episode shows Kayce telling Monica he is "changing paths" by joining the U.S. Marshals to find "a new beginning for me and Tate." The next installment, titled "Zone of Death," airs on Sunday, March 8, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. In this episode, Kayce attempts to embrace his new life during a Marshals operation to prevent a domestic terror attack, which uncovers buried secrets from his Dutton family past. He also works to build relationships with his new teammates.

Marshals airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the CBS Television Network and streams on Paramount+, available immediately for Premium subscribers and the following day for Essential plan users. The cast includes Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, Arielle Kebbel as Belle, Ash Santos as Andrea, Tatanka Means as Miles, Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater, and Mo Brings Plenty as Mo.
