Alexander Zverev defeated Flavio Cobolli in five sets to claim his maiden Grand Slam at the French Open.
The German triumphed 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 in the final. He had reached the title match after earlier wins that included a four-set semifinal victory over Jakub Mensik.
Zverev described the week as the most stressful of his life after several top players were eliminated early. He said he lied to himself to cope with pressure and did not sleep after Jannik Sinner's loss.
Upon returning to Germany, Zverev received a replica of the Musketeers trophy at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle. The smaller version, about one-third the size of the original, drew criticism from fans on social media.
Zverev is scheduled to begin his next tournament with a singles match against Vit Kopriva on Tuesday.
