Björk announces eclipse rave festival in Iceland

Björk is organizing a one-day rave festival called Echolalia during the total solar eclipse on August 12 at Víðistaðatún sculpture park in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland. The event lies in the path of totality, where the sun will be fully obscured for one minute and four seconds. Performers include DJ sets by Björk and Arca, with Ronja Jóhannsdóttir and electronic trio Sideproject also appearing.

The festival builds on Björk's tradition of Mánakvöld dance evenings under full moons, where she invites friends to DJ. A press release states: “For years we’ve been having Mánakvöld ~ dance evenings under a full moon where Björk invites friends to DJ with her. This time we gather under the total solar eclipse and dance.” Echolalia coincides with Björk’s exhibition of the same name at the National Gallery of Iceland, running from May 30 to September 19. The show features installations inspired by songs “Sorrowful Soil” and “Ancestress” from her 2022 album Fossora, plus one track from a forthcoming album. The announcement comes as first reported by Pitchfork on April 8. Björk has a history of environmentally themed works, including a 2024 AI sound piece at Paris’ Pompidou Centre addressing biodiversity loss and a recent statement supporting Greenland’s independence amid U.S. annexation threats.
