Cubs place Phil Maton on injured list with knee issue

The Chicago Cubs placed veteran reliever Phil Maton on the 15-day injured list with right knee tendinitis before Monday's game against the Detroit Tigers.

Manager Craig Counsell said Maton underwent an MRI after experiencing a flare-up during Sunday's appearance against the Minnesota Twins. The results prompted the team to seek additional medical opinions on his condition.

Maton had returned from a previous stint on the injured list on July 11. This marks his third trip to the IL this season for the same knee issue that also sidelined him in April.

The Cubs added right-hander Aaron Civale to the active roster after acquiring him in a trade. They also activated Jameson Taillon and designated Drew Pomeranz for assignment.
