Dustin Johnson fell from near the lead to 11 shots back during a difficult stretch on Friday at the U.S. Open in Southampton, N.Y. The two-time major winner carded a 77 but remains in position to play the weekend.
Johnson started the second round even through 10 holes, just one shot behind leader Wyndham Clark. He then doubled the 11th hole and bogeyed the next two before a quadruple-bogey 8 on the 15th, where his ball struck rocks in the bunker multiple times.
The 41-year-old said the wind made club selection difficult and insisted he hit no poor shots on several holes that cost him strokes. He finished the round with a birdie on 16 and pars on the final two holes.
Johnson opened with a 66 on Thursday to sit three over par overall. Clark leads at seven under, and Johnson trails the second-place group by six shots with 36 holes remaining.
This marks Johnson's final season with a 10-year exemption earned from his 2016 U.S. Open victory. He turned 42 on Monday.
