The Ethiopian Meteorology Institute has stated that strengthening water management systems for agriculture and irrigation is necessary. The call follows forecasts of possible El Niño effects that could cause early cessation of summer rains in parts of the country.
Deputy Director General Asamnew Teshome (Dr) noted that up to 100 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in western, northern and northeastern areas during the previous month of Sene. He said this contributed significantly to land preparation and environmental protection work.
The institute indicated that rising sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean next month could lead to an El Niño event. As a result, summer rains in some eastern and northern areas may end earlier than usual.
Forecasts show normal or below-normal rainfall likely in Tigray and some zones of central and western Amhara. In contrast, normal to above-normal rainfall is expected in Benishangul Gumuz, western Oromia, southwest Ethiopia and Gambella regions.
Stakeholders and agricultural experts were urged to provide necessary professional support to farmers based on weather forecast data. The institute stressed the importance of using suitable crops, short-maturing varieties and drought-resistant seeds.
