Four areas to reach ‘danger’ heat index level — PAGASA

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) projects “danger” level heat index of 42 degrees Celsius in four areas. These include Catarman in Northern Samar, Zamboanga City, Cotabato City, and Dumangas in Iloilo, based on yesterday's forecast. Officials urge the public to limit sun exposure and stay hydrated.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecasts a heat index of 42 degrees Celsius in Catarman, Northern Samar; Zamboanga City; Cotabato City; and Dumangas, Iloilo.
This falls in the “danger” range of 42 to 51 degrees Celsius, where continued exposure during activity may cause heat stroke, PAGASA stated.

The agency advises the public to avoid prolonged sun exposure, drink plenty of water, and refrain from strenuous outdoor activities, particularly during peak heat hours.
Light clothing and frequent breaks in shaded or cooler areas are recommended to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Meanwhile, PAGASA is monitoring tropical storm Sinlaku, located 2,730 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao and nearly stationary.
Weather specialist Daniel James Villamil said it has maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts up to 105 kph.
If it enters the Philippine area of responsibility, it will be named Caloy, the third tropical cyclone this year, and is forecast to recurve between April 16 and 22 while remaining far from landmasses.

Mexico City's Secretaría de Gestión Integral de Riesgos y Protección Civil (Sgircp/SGIRPC) issued an alert for temperatures up to 31 degrees Celsius this weekend, particularly during Andrea Bocelli's free Romanza Tour concert at the Zócalo on Saturday, April 18. Very hot afternoon conditions are forecast with partly cloudy skies and possible light scattered rains at night. Officials recommend sunscreen, hydration, cotton clothing, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and street food due to spoilage risks.

PAGASA reported several areas reached borderline “extreme caution” heat index after a cold snap due to weakening northeast monsoon. The index ranges from 33 to 41 degrees Celsius, potentially causing heat cramps and exhaustion. Cotabato City and Zamboanga City neared 40 degrees Celsius.
