The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry heard evidence on 22 July 2026 linking a 2021 burglary at journalist Marianne Thamm’s home to Crime Intelligence messages, while IDAC head Andrea Johnson faced questions over her office’s handling of complaints leading to police arrests.
Evidence presented at the commission showed that messages from Feroz Khan’s devices referred to activating counter measures against Thamm shortly before her Cape Town home was burgled on 13 March 2021. Advocate Adila Hassim noted the timing warranted further investigation, though no conclusive link was established.
Johnson testified on the same day about how her office obtained an affidavit from politician Fadiel Adams, which led to the 2025 arrests of Crime Intelligence officers including Dumisani Khumalo. She rejected suggestions that the affidavit had been solicited and maintained there were reasonable grounds to proceed.
Commissioner Sesi Baloyi questioned whether intrusive steps taken early in the process amounted to a misuse of power, citing a lack of legislative basis. Johnson offered no comment on that point.
The proceedings are scheduled to continue on 23 July 2026.
