Opposition parties criticize Tamil Nadu government over terror arrests

Delhi police arrested six Bangladeshi nationals in Tiruppur for alleged involvement in a terror plot linked to Pakistan's ISI and Bangladeshi groups. Tamil Nadu opposition leaders from AIADMK and BJP blamed the DMK government for failing to maintain security. The DMK countered by accusing the central government of negligence.

On Saturday, Delhi police arrested six Bangladeshi nationals working at a factory in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, as part of an alleged terror conspiracy supported by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Bangladesh-based extremist organizations. The arrests form part of a broader operation involving eight suspects, with the remaining two apprehended in West Bengal. The individuals identified include Mizanur Rahman, Mohammad Shabat, Umar, Mohammad Litan, Mohammad Shahid, and Mohammad Ujjal.

A senior police official stated that the Delhi Police team took custody of the six suspects, who were held overnight in Tiruppur before being transported to the national capital.

Edappadi Palaniswami, leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly and AIADMK general secretary, criticized the DMK-led government on X. He questioned the role of the state's Anti-Terrorism Squad, saying, “Until Delhi police came and arrested, what was the DMK government’s ATS doing? If we allow this incapable Stalin model DMK rule to continue, there is fear among people that it might even lead to another horrific incident like 1998. Therefore, to return peace in Tamil Nadu, this DMK rule must be put to an end.”

Former BJP state president K Annamalai echoed these sentiments, alleging that the DMK has turned the state into a haven for terrorists and criminals. He remarked, “The corrupt and incompetent DMK government has transformed a once peaceful state into a safe haven for terrorists, anti-social elements, international drug smugglers and ruthless criminals.”

In response, DMK spokesperson A Saravanan blamed the BJP-led Union government, stating, “It is the incompetence of the BJP-led Union government that has led to terrorists freely operating in the state of Tamil Nadu.” He questioned the National Investigation Agency's effectiveness under Home Minister Amit Shah and raised concerns about border and immigration controls.

K M Subramanian, president of the Tiruppur Exporters’ Association, expressed surprise at the incident and announced plans to reinforce verification processes for migrant workers using Aadhaar cards.
