Karol Stopa, a prominent Polish tennis commentator, died on July 9 at his home in Poland. He was 78 years old. His passing followed a sudden decline in health linked to a European heatwave.
Stopa had worked in sports media for over 35 years. He began in 1989 at Polish Television, serving as a reporter, publisher, and commentator before becoming department chief in 1997 and 1998. He joined Eurosport's Polish division in 1998 and became known for his coverage of Grand Slam tournaments.
Earlier in life, Stopa played professional tennis for SKS Warszawianka club in the 1960s. His commentary style combined tactical analysis with storytelling, and he covered stars including the Big Three in men's tennis and the Williams sisters.
Stopa had commented on compatriot Iga Świątek's career. In a recent podcast he noted changes in her demeanor, saying she used to be "a very cheerful, natural girl" and wondered what had changed. He had been scheduled to discuss the ongoing Wimbledon with co-commentator Lech Sidor but could not due to illness.
