President Lee Jae Myung departed from Geneva Airport on June 18 for his return home. The trip marked his first visit to Europe, which included attendance at the G7 summit.
President Lee visited Belgium, Italy and France during the trip that began last Tuesday. In Belgium he held summits with Prime Minister Bart De Wever and EU leaders. In Italy he agreed with President Sergio Mattarella to elevate ties to a special strategic partnership.
At the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, Lee held a 90-minute discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump on peace on the Korean Peninsula and the Korea-U.S. alliance. Trump invited Lee and first lady Kim Hea Kyung to play golf and pledged to play a role in advancing Korean Peninsula issues.
Lee posted on X that the trip would expand South Korea’s diplomacy beyond Northeast Asia to Europe. The visit focused on energy supply chain resilience and cooperation on AI and other global challenges.
