Ruling coalition presses for middle-class measures in National Reconstruction Plan

Chilean ruling coalition leaders at La Moneda demanded direct benefits for the middle class in the National Reconstruction Plan to be unveiled by President José Antonio Kast on Wednesday. The plan includes 43 measures on taxes, permitting, and post-fire rebuilding. Chamber of Deputies President Jorge Alessandri criticized the absence of explicit support for this group.

On Monday around 11 a.m., ruling coalition bloc leaders and party presidents gathered at La Moneda to discuss the National Reconstruction Plan, the cornerstone of José Antonio Kast's administration. The executive stated the bill will enter Congress after the president's televised address on Wednesday.

Chamber President Jorge Alessandri (UDI) told T13 Radio: “I don’t see in the 43 measures one that makes the middle class celebrate or speaks directly to them.” He suggested deductions on second-category taxes for education and health expenses for Chilean workers.

Others agreed. Bloc leader Diego Schalper (RN) noted proposals sent to the Finance Minister for middle class, rural areas, and SMEs. Ximena Ossandón (RN) and Jorge Guzmán (Evópoli) stressed reconstruction cannot exclude this majority sector.

The coalition awaits the final version at a lunch with Kast on Tuesday at Cerro Castillo. UDI President Guillermo Ramírez foresaw coordination to advance the bill.
