Morena Senator Enrique Inzunza requested a 22-hour leave to be absent from extraordinary Senate sessions scheduled for May 28 and 29, amid US accusations of alleged links to organized crime.
Through a social media message, Inzunza reported that his substitute, architect Omar López Campos, will participate in the sessions. The Sinaloa legislator said the decision aims to preserve the chamber and a high-level debate amid a “media onslaught”.
The opposition, through PRI’s Alejandro Moreno and Carolina Viggiano, labeled him “coward,” “boor” and “fraud.” Morena coordinator Ignacio Mier defended the measure as prudent and said the opposition had already been denied its “show.”
Inzunza appeared on May 26 before the Attorney General’s Office as a witness in the investigation stemming from the US accusation. The leave ends this Friday, May 29, at 3:00 p.m.
