Following the Secretariat of Public Education's decision to end the 2025-2026 school year on June 5, President Claudia Sheinbaum defended the move while unions and parents raised objections over strikes, calendars, and legal requirements.
On May 8, Secretary Mario Delgado confirmed that basic and upper secondary classes nationwide will conclude June 5, with administrative duties wrapping up June 12. The following school year begins August 31 after reinforcement sessions from August 17–28.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said the calendar change resulted from meetings with state education secretaries and teacher input, emphasizing that no class time would be lost. Critics, including the National Coordinator of Education Workers, accused the SEP of timing the advance to prevent a national strike during the 2026 World Cup. Oaxaca’s Section 22 plans to maintain its own schedule and finish classes on July 7.
Parents’ organizations and private schools rejected the adjustment, labeling it a serious error that may violate the General Education Law’s minimum of 185 class days.
