Skyrim on Switch 2 receives performance and quality modes update

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Nintendo Switch 2 has seen improvements through a recent patch addressing initial launch issues. The update introduces selectable performance and visual quality modes to balance frame rates and graphics. Players can now choose between smoother gameplay or enhanced details based on their preferences.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, originally released in 2011, arrived on the Nintendo Switch 2 in December with promises of better visuals and performance over the Switch 1 version. Enhanced graphics featured sharper details thanks to DLSS technology implementation. However, the launch suffered from notable input lag, which Digital Foundry later confirmed, disappointing many players despite the visual gains.

Bethesda responded with an initial patch that removed the frame rate cap to lessen input lag. This helped somewhat but left problems in docked mode, where the console's Variable Refresh Rate screen only partially hid inconsistencies.

The key 1.2 patch then tackled input lag and stability more effectively. It added two modes for players to select:
- Performance Mode: Aims for 60 FPS by reducing internal resolution, object density, and level-of-detail settings, suiting those wanting fluid controls.
- Visual Quality Mode: Locks at 30 FPS for higher resolution and improved level-of-detail, appealing to users prioritizing image sharpness.

Community feedback has been positive, with even the 30 FPS option showing better responsiveness. Variations between modes include differences in grass draw distances, NPC details, shadows, and textures.

These changes have brought the game closer to expectations for the Switch 2. Further tweaks, like a 40 FPS balanced mode for handheld play, remain possible. Bethesda's work continues, especially with Fallout 4 slated for the platform soon.

Taiwan's Entertainment Software Rating Information Board has rated Bethesda's Starfield for the Nintendo Switch 2, signaling a likely port to the console. The leak surfaced a week after the game's PS5 version launched on April 7. Early PS5 sales reached about 140,000 units in the first week, according to data analyst Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Overwatch launched with Season 2 but runs at a locked 30 frames per second, falling short of Blizzard's promise for 60fps performance in both docked and handheld modes. Players report sluggish movement and imprecise aiming compared to other platforms. Blizzard has acknowledged the framerate issue and is working on a patch.
