UDI and RN deputies request audit from Contraloría on government telework

Deputies from the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) and National Renewal (RN) have requested an audit from the Comptroller General of the Republic regarding telework among thousands of public employees. The move follows revelations that over 3,600 officials continue remote work, exceeding legal limits in some instances. The lawmakers voice concerns over productivity and compliance with regulations.

On December 4, 2025, a group of opposition deputies submitted a formal request to the Comptroller General of the Republic to probe telework practices in the public sector. Those involved include Felipe Donoso and Jorge Alessandri from UDI, as well as Frank Sauerbaum, Carla Morales, and Miguel Mellado from RN. The initiative stems from a La Tercera report highlighting irregularities in remote work implementation.

According to Transparencia Activa data, 2,590 officials from 40 subsecretarías—excluding services—and the Presidency are listed in telework solely in the Metropolitan Region. Including other regions, the number rises to 3,622 authorized employees. Furthermore, six central entities exceed 20% of their staffing in this mode, all approved by the Budget Directorate (Dipres).

The deputies acknowledge that current legislation permits telework under specific conditions but raise doubts about its effects on efficiency. “It is essential to verify whether these authorizations granted remain properly justified and whether the criteria set by law are being met,” they stated in their request. The opposition aims to ensure that management maintains proper oversight and adheres to the law governing public sector operations.

This request underscores tensions in government administration, where telework continues despite post-pandemic rules curbing its overuse.
