Yogyakarta's Balai Yasa upholds railway reliability and innovation

Yogyakarta's Balai Yasa, one of Java's largest train maintenance facilities, has upheld locomotive and train performance since 1914. Spanning 12.88 hectares, it recently launched an innovative locomotive in July 2025. International certifications underscore its commitment to quality and safety.

Operating in Daop 6 Yogyakarta, Balai Yasa Yogyakarta serves as a key maintenance hub for PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI). Established in 1914, the facility maintains locomotives, Diesel Rail Cars (KRD), and Electric Rail Cars (KRL) to support national train operations.

Covering 12.88 hectares, it conducts annual, biennial, and triennial maintenance. The site holds certifications including ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management System, SNI ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management System, and SNI ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

“Balai Yasa Yogyakarta merupakan salah satu jantung teknis KAI. Di sinilah standar keandalan dan keselamatan dijaga melalui kerja para teknisi, engineer, dan mekanik yang terus berinovasi menjaga kualitas sarana,” said PT KAI's VP of Public Relations, Anne Purba.

In July 2025, Balai Yasa launched the internally developed Locomotive CC 201 8916. This locomotive features a new digitalization system, including TFT Display, online data logger access, and fault diagnostic system, aimed at enhancing maintenance efficiency and precision.

The facility has also earned national awards, such as Overall Winner of the Innovator Internal Award (IIA) and the entity with the most IIA submissions, highlighting its ongoing commitment to sustainable innovation in the railway sector.
