The Vancouver Canucks are positioning their defense for future success despite losing Quinn Hughes. Young defencemen Zeev Buium, Tom Willander, and Elias Pettersson, alongside veteran Filip Hronek, form a promising core. This group highlights the team's strong prospect pipeline.
The Vancouver Canucks have transitioned their blue line after parting with Quinn Hughes, a generational talent who holds multiple franchise records. Leading the new era are 20-year-old Zeev Buium and Tom Willander, high draft picks selected 11th overall in 2023 and 12th in 2024, respectively. Buium, who dominated in the NCAA and secured gold medals at the World Juniors and 2025 World Championship, brings elite potential. Teammate Conor Garland praised his mindset, noting Buium's pre-gold medal game remark: “I’ve never lost at anything. I have five gold medals. We’re going to win.”
Willander, previously the top defensive prospect, transitioned from Boston University, where he recorded six goals and 49 points in 77 games, to the NHL. He debuted on October 28 against the New York Rangers and has since averaged 13:56 of ice time per night, often pairing with Hronek on the second power-play unit. In 27 games, Willander boasts the lowest expected goals against at five-on-five among defencemen with over 20 appearances and has been on the ice for just 14 goals against, earning trust over veterans like Pierre-Olivier Joseph.
Complementing them is 21-year-old Elias Pettersson, a third-round pick from 2022 who moved from the Swedish Hockey League. With 62 NHL games, he has reached a career-high six points this season and offers a physical, two-way style reminiscent of Chris Tanev but with stronger offensive upside, akin to Jaccob Slavin or Devon Toews. Pettersson has paired effectively with Willander recently.
Veteran Filip Hronek, under contract for six more years, provides stability. The pipeline includes Sawyer Mynio, Kirill Kudryavtsev, and Victor Mancini for depth. This skating, intelligent group could rival league elites, focusing on both offense and defense while the forward lines evolve.
