Centre notifies appointment of five supreme court judges

The Union government on Monday notified the appointment of four high court chief justices and senior advocate V Mohana as Supreme Court judges.

The move follows a recommendation by the Supreme Court collegium on May 27. The five appointees are justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli and V Mohana. They are expected to be sworn in on Tuesday.

Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointments on X. The notification expands the court's working strength to 36 judges, excluding the Chief Justice of India, after the sanctioned strength was raised to 37 through an ordinance in May.

The collegium sought to balance regional representation, seniority, merit and gender diversity. V Mohana's elevation is notable as she will be only the second woman lawyer elevated directly from the Bar to the Supreme Court.
