Civil Registry erroneously issued IDs to five refugees due to validity error

The director of the Civil Registry, Omar Morales, confirmed that only five cases of IDs issued with incorrect validity to refugees were detected.

During an interview with La Tercera and before the Interior Government Commission, Omar Morales explained that the Civil Registry has never issued documents to migrants in irregular status. The five errors occurred when processing applications from people with refugee status, who were granted a five-year validity instead of the established eight months. The cases were detected quickly and the IDs were blocked. The individuals were contacted to return the documents and new correct versions were issued. Morales stated that “only the five cases mentioned of refugee persons were detected” and assured that no IDs have been issued to irregular migrants. The Comptroller requested information from the Civil Registry to verify the facts. Case details include attendances between May 2024 and February 2025, with corrections made between March and September 2025. Four of the people maintain valid IDs after renewal.
