ESPN announces Nick Saban documentary series

ESPN is developing a six-part documentary series on legendary college football coach Nick Saban, in collaboration with Words + Pictures. The project, titled Saban, explores his career achievements and personal life through exclusive footage and interviews. It highlights his record seven national championships and influence on the sport.

The announcement comes as ESPN prepares to broadcast the College Football Playoff National Championship game. The series, directed by Russell Dinallo, is produced by Connor Schell, Libby Geist, Aaron Cohen, and Alexa Conway of Words + Pictures, alongside Tom Rinaldi. Gabe Honig serves as co-executive producer and showrunner.

Saban, who secured seven national titles—one with LSU in 2003 and six with Alabama—retired from coaching two years ago. He now works as an ESPN analyst and endorses brands like Aflac and Vrbo. The documentary draws on hundreds of hours of previously unseen footage from his time at Alabama, LSU, the Miami Dolphins, and Michigan State. It features more than 30 hours of interviews with Saban himself and over 80 with former players, assistant coaches, rivals, family, friends, and observers.

Central to the narrative is the role of Saban's wife, Terry Saban, whose support shaped his success. His programs also produced four Heisman Trophy winners and numerous NFL talents.

"With my coaching days behind me, Ms. Terry and I have been doing a lot of reflection and realized we were ready to tell our story," Saban stated. He added that the Words + Pictures team encouraged a comprehensive review of his career, including contributions from many players and coaches he worked with.

Connor Schell, CEO of Words + Pictures, praised Saban as "a football genius, a singular leader, and a true icon who has done more than anyone to shape the modern game of college football." He emphasized Saban's attention to detail and process as key to his legacy.

ESPN has not yet revealed the premiere date or full distribution details for the series.
