Brady Ebert, former guitarist of the band Turnstile, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault after allegedly striking Brendan Yates' father with his car. The incident occurred outside the victim's Silver Spring, Maryland, home on March 29. Turnstile issued a statement confirming the father survived surgery and expressing no further words for Ebert.
Montgomery County police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at 4:41 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, finding 78-year-old William Yates in the front yard of his Silver Spring home with trauma to his lower extremities. According to police and Yates' account reported by The Baltimore Banner, Ebert drove up, honked his horn, cursed, and drove off before returning to intentionally hit Yates with his 2001 Buick. Ebert allegedly returned once more, telling Yates he 'deserved it,' before first responders arrived. Yates told police that Ebert had been causing issues with his family since being fired from Turnstile in 2022. Police later found Ebert's unoccupied Buick with front-end damage, obtained a warrant after reviewing surveillance, and arrested him on March 31 at 1:03 p.m. He made his first court appearance on April 1 and is held without bond, with a bail review on April 2 and preliminary hearing set for May 1. Ebert's attorney, Andrew D. Alpert of Alpert Schreyer Trial Attorneys, declined to comment when reached by Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. Turnstile stated they cut ties with Ebert in 2022 due to 'a consistent pattern of harmful behavior' and threats of violence, after trying to support his recovery. 'In the years since, his baseless tirades have continued in public... Over the past few months, his threats only escalated further,' the band said. 'This past week, that violence led to a physical attack... We are grateful that Mr. Yates survived, has successfully undergone surgery, and we’re hoping for the best possible outcome in his recovery. We have no language left for Brady. Please respect our privacy in this time.' Ebert, a founding member of Turnstile formed in 2010 in Baltimore, left the band amid reports of peace orders filed against him, including one by drummer Daniel Fang, though denied by the court. He formed The S.E.T. in 2025 but was ousted last month for inflammatory comments about Turnstile.
