FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated that the matter will be examined and debated in the relevant committees after the 2026 World Cup, hosted in the United States, Mexico and Canada with 48 teams.

The proposal for a 64-team World Cup was first raised by Ignacio Alonso in March 2025, followed by discussions in September and November that year. Opponents include Aleksander Čeferin of UEFA and Victor Montagliani of CONCACAF.

The 2030 World Cup will be held in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
