Hong Kong elderly use boccia to fight loneliness

Ninety-two-year-old Chow Kam-shim and her 100-year-old husband Lau Moon-wing play boccia daily at their Hong Kong residential home to stay active and connected.

The couple began learning the precision sport about five years ago.
In 2024 they competed against more than 300 elderly participants and won third place at an annual boccia competition organised by NGO Helping Hand.
“We play the sport to train our brains, exercise our bodies and stay connected,” Chow said.
The report notes that elderly loneliness can be as harmful as heavy smoking, with experts pointing to community solutions to address the health risk.
