The Houston Astros reinstated shortstop Jeremy Peña from the injured list on Friday ahead of their game against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in Arlington.
Peña had been sidelined for 10 days with a left calf strain that occurred on June 30. He returns after hitting .381 with an .816 OPS in the five games before the injury and .319 overall in June.
Manager Joe Espada expressed excitement about the move, saying Peña serves as a sparkplug to the lineup. The team holds a 26-22 record when Peña plays compared to 20-27 without him.
To accommodate the reinstatement, Houston designated infielder Braden Shewmake for assignment. Peña had previously missed time this season with a right hamstring strain in April.
