Joburg Film Festival highlights clash between art and censorship

The Joburg Film Festival is addressing tensions between artistic freedom and state censorship through discussions and films. Filmmaker Arya Lalloo is hosting a conversation with artist Gabrielle Goliath on The Voice of Hind Rajab. The event follows Minister Gayton McKenzie's withdrawal of support for Goliath's work due to Palestinian references.

The Joburg Film Festival, entering its 8th year, runs from 3 to 8 March at various venues including Sandton Theatre On The Square, The Bioscope, The Forge, Artistry and Nu Metro. Tickets cost R50 to R200 per film, available on Webtickets. The theme, Feel the Frame, celebrates bold African and global storytelling as a sensory and emotional journey.

It features a conversation hosted by filmmaker Arya Lalloo with artist Gabrielle Goliath about The Voice of Hind Rajab. The discussion highlights friction following Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie’s decision to withdraw support for Goliath’s performance piece Elegy, which includes Palestinian references.
