Medieval floor discovered in barn in Gagnef

A well-preserved wooden floor from the 1280s has been found in a barn next to the church in Gagnef. Priest and dendrochronologist Torbjörn Axelsson made the discovery during his research.

The floor originates from Gagnef’s medieval church. Axelsson sampled the logs and confirmed they date to the late 1200s. He noted that most floors from this era are in museums or churches, yet this example remains unusually well preserved.

In the 1770s the floor was removed from the church because it did not match the new vault that required pillars. It was later reused in a nearby barn where it stayed hidden until now.

The find supplies fresh details about Gagnef’s past. Axelsson pointed out that written records are scarce, but the wood offers concrete context and greater understanding of the area’s history.
