Omar Chávez, son of former champion Julio César Chávez, left the Aguaruto prison in Culiacán on Thursday after being detained on Wednesday over accusations of domestic violence and injuries.
The Mexican boxer was arrested on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 08:53 hours in Culiacán, Sinaloa, according to the National Registry of Detentions. Omar Chávez faced an arrest warrant for failing to attend hearings related to a complaint by his partner for alleged domestic violence.
After an initial hearing at the courts of the Sede de Justicia Penal Acusatorio y Oral, central zone, in Aguaruto, the pugilist was released to continue the legal process outside prison. Sinaloa's penal code provides for sentences of one to six years in prison for domestic violence, plus psychological treatment and no-contact orders.
The arrest revives previous controversies surrounding the boxer, such as his presence in 2013 at a party where Rafael Arellano Félix was murdered. The Chávez family has publicly mentioned Omar's addiction issues in recent years.
