The People Power Party selected incumbent Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon, seeking a third term, as its candidate for the June 3 local elections. Park won a majority in the primary, defeating first-term lawmaker Joo Jin-woo. He will face Democratic Party candidate Rep. Jeon Jae-soo.
The People Power Party confirmed incumbent Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon as its mayoral candidate on April 11, the party announced. According to Park Duk-hyum, chairman of the nomination management committee, Park secured a majority of votes in the primary, defeating Rep. Joo Jin-woo.
Park was first elected in the 2021 Busan mayoral by-election and reelected in July 2022. He now seeks a third term. He will compete against Rep. Jeon Jae-soo, the Democratic Party's candidate for Busan mayor.
"Now is the time for victory. I will serve as the field commander and vanguard for all PPP candidates," Park said. He pledged to block what he called the Democratic Party's "one-party dominance without checks."
Last month, Park shaved his head to urge swift passage of the "Special Act on the Development of Busan as a Global Hub City." The bill has been pending in a parliamentary committee for nearly two years since its reintroduction in May 2024.
