Rory McIlroy a game-time decision for Players Championship with back injury

Rory McIlroy has described himself as a game-time decision for the first round of the 2026 Players Championship due to a back injury sustained last week. The world number one withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational after experiencing spasms during a warmup and has been undergoing rehabilitation. He arrived at TPC Sawgrass on Wednesday for a practice session, reporting improvement but taking his status hour by hour.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Rory McIlroy, the defending champion of the Players Championship, arrived at TPC Sawgrass on Wednesday afternoon for the first time this week, following a back injury that forced his withdrawal from the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. The injury occurred during a warmup session ahead of the third round on Saturday at Bay Hill, marking his first mid-tournament withdrawal in more than 13 years. McIlroy, who had been rehabbing with his physiotherapist in West Palm Beach, Florida, described the issue as stemming from overextending a hinge movement during a workout, resulting in spasms and sensitivity in the surrounding muscles, including the glutes, hip flexors, and right adductor.

During a lengthy range session, McIlroy hit shots from wedges up to a six-iron and performed stretches, including pushups. He later walked the back nine with a wedge and putter. 'I hit up until 6-iron on the range and it felt okay,' McIlroy said, adding that he was managing the injury hour by hour. 'It's better than it was... I couldn't stand to address the ball on Saturday morning on the range at Bay Hill, and it's obviously better than that. So, yeah, probably a game-time decision, but all indications are pointing in the right direction.'

The 36-year-old has a relatively clean injury history, with a similar back issue only once before, at the 2023 Tour Championship, where he improved significantly by the final round. McIlroy noted that medication was helping and that doctors assured him playing would not risk further damage, though he described ongoing discomfort as fatigue rather than pain in the affected area.

McIlroy is scheduled to tee off at 1:42 p.m. local time on Thursday alongside Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama. A victory would mark his third Players title, tying Jack Nicklaus for the most in tournament history, and make him only the second player after Scottie Scheffler to win back-to-back editions.
