The Steelers, holding 12 picks in the upcoming NFL draft including five in the third and fourth rounds, hosted Drew Allar for a 30-visit this week. This comes after their formal meeting with him at the combine in March. The team has also brought in quarterbacks Taylen Green, Cole Payton, and Carson Beck for pre-draft visits, signaling focus on mid-round prospects rather than early selections at the position. All four are viewed as developmental projects suitable for those rounds. Brian Batko, appearing on the North Shore Drive podcast, ranked Allar highest among them. “I’d take a chance on developing it in Drew Allar... But I’d probably rank Allar first among them,” Batko said, referring to Allar's need to improve pocket presence. He compared Allar's potential development to work needed on Payton's release and Green's overall skills. Allar possesses standout physical attributes, including an ideal build, a big arm, and the ability to layer passes over defenders. When his mechanics are sound, he delivers accurate throws and shows willingness to stand in the pocket under pressure. However, he requires refinement in situational awareness, mechanics for better accuracy, and a shift from hunting big plays to exploiting defensive offerings. Batko noted the Steelers' due diligence with Allar underscores a clear connection, positioning him as a prime candidate for one of their mid-round picks.
