Trump says tariffs drove Korean, Japanese, German carmakers to build U.S. plants

U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that his tariff policy has prompted South Korean, Japanese and German automakers to build factories in the United States.

Trump made the remarks at a White House event marking the launch of "Trump Accounts," new investment accounts for children.

"We've never built as many automobile plants. They are all over, and they are coming from all over the world. You know why? Because they don't want to pay tariffs," Trump said.

Since returning to the White House last year, Trump has used tariffs to revitalize U.S. manufacturing. South Korean conglomerate Hyundai Motor Group announced last year it would invest $26 billion in the U.S. through 2028.

US President Donald Trump announced on May 1, 2026, via Truth Social, 25% tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union effective next week, claiming the bloc breached last summer's trade deal. The EU insists it is complying, demands clarifications, and reserves all options for retaliation, as Germany's auto sector braces for heavy impact.

A Cheong Wa Dae official said South Korea will carefully assess the impact of the Trump administration's decision to raise tariffs on EU autos and trucks to 25% and respond accordingly. The move has drawn attention in Seoul due to South Korea's similar tariff deal with the US. The government plans to communicate closely with Washington to maintain stable trade relations.
