American Airlines delays AAdvantage status updates for some flyers

Many American Airlines AAdvantage members who qualified for elite status through late credit card spending may need to wait weeks for confirmation. The airline's qualification period ended on February 28, with points resets occurring in early March. Updates to accounts are processed gradually as credit card statements close.

The American Airlines AAdvantage program's status qualification year spans from March 1 to the end of February the following year. At the beginning of March, all members' Loyalty Points balances reset to zero, marking the start of a new earning cycle. However, for holders of eligible American Airlines credit cards, points earned through February 28 still contribute to the 2026 status tier, even if the card statement closes after that date.

For instance, spending $5,000 on an American Airlines card on February 28 earns Loyalty Points toward 2026 status, not 2027. Purchases from March 1 onward apply to the subsequent year's total. This structure allows last-minute spending to boost status, but it introduces delays in processing.

One flyer, aiming for Platinum Pro status—requiring 125,000 Loyalty Points—reached the threshold with over 122,000 points accumulated by late February. Additional expenses, including a mattress purchase charged to a Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard®, pushed the total past the benchmark. Despite this, the status did not appear immediately in the account because the card statement had closed on February 15.

American Airlines typically takes several weeks to update statuses, potentially up to 10 weeks, as it reconciles February earnings with March statements. The process unfolds in stages: first, redeemable miles post for the prior month's spending; next, Loyalty Points from post-statement February purchases for 2026 status; and finally, points from March 1 for 2027. Flyers who believe they have qualified are advised to monitor their accounts and emails for notifications over the coming weeks.

This delay affects those relying on credit card activity for elite benefits, such as Emerald status in the Oneworld alliance through Platinum Pro.
