Aqua announces split after more than 30 years

Europop icons Aqua have called it quits after three decades, dropping the news on Instagram just shy of their debut album's big anniversary.

The Danish-Norwegian group, famous for Barbie Girl and other late-90s bangers like Doctor Jones, confirmed the amicable end in a heartfelt statement posted Monday. They wrote they decided “to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band” while memories and love for each other stay strong, after selling over 33 million records worldwide since forming in 1995. Current members René Dif, Søren Rasted and Lene Nystrøm noted the decision came after Claus Norreen left in 2016 for other projects.
