Autistic boy's UPS-themed birthday party delights online

A seven-year-old autistic boy named Sebastian celebrated his birthday with a fully themed party centered on his special interest in UPS, complete with packages, balloons, and a custom cake. His mother, Jenny Grant, shared a video of the event on TikTok, which quickly went viral as viewers appreciated the creative nod to her son's passion. The local UPS store contributed materials to make the celebration authentic.

Sebastian, who has autism, requested a chocolate UPS cake and a large gathering for his seventh birthday, according to his mother Jenny Grant. Unable to invite a million people as he wished, Grant transformed the party into an elaborate UPS tribute. The setup featured brown and gold balloons, banners, and favors adorned with UPS stickers, alongside real UPS packages and a small cardboard cutout of a UPS center. The highlight was a UPS-themed cake that matched the decor.

Grant's local UPS store supported the effort by providing logos, packaging materials, and pens as party favors at no cost, after her own mother explained the theme during a visit. In a TikTok video capturing the event, Grant captioned it: “Having a ‘normal’ birthday party theme with an autistic son. Level: impossible.” Sebastian's joyful reaction, exclaiming “ohhhhh my goodness,” highlighted his delight.

The video's virality meant the celebration reached far beyond the initial guests, fulfilling Sebastian's wish in an unexpected way. Grant noted to People magazine that it was shared with over a million viewers online. Inspired by the post, commenters shared their own experiences with niche party themes for children with special interests, such as 20th Century Fox, Home Depot, pool filters, broccoli, coleslaw, and Circle K— the latter sponsored by a local gas station.

Following the buzz, UPS reached out to Grant, offering to arrange a visit for Sebastian with a driver to see a truck up close. She expressed hope that the opportunity would make his year, emphasizing how such tailored events create memorable experiences for autistic children.
