Cybertruck owner in San Diego faces issues during rare rain

Max Delbecq, a Tesla Cybertruck owner in San Diego, encountered software glitches when driving in recent rainfall, the first in his area. He reported excessive Sentry Mode activations and Full Self-Driving faults due to rain-obstructed cameras. Despite these problems, he praised the truck's traction on wet roads.

Max Delbecq, a Cybertruck owner from sunny San Diego, shared his experience on the Tesla Cybertruck Owners Facebook group after his neighborhood saw rare rainfall over the weekend. Driving in wet conditions for the first time, Delbecq noted that the weather was not severe, but it triggered unexpected issues with the vehicle's software features.

He wrote: “Rain in San Diego over the weekend caused Sentry Mode to go nuts. Unnecessary use of resources. Also, lots of FSD faults due to camera obstructions caused by rain. I think TSLA is going to have to dial in the software to adapt to inclement weather. I'm in San Diego, and our weather is pretty non-existent, so I can imagine it's much worse for those of you who drive in actual hazardous conditions.” Delbecq attached a photo of the Cybertruck's center touchscreen displaying 26 Sentry events triggered by the rain.

Delbecq expressed frustration with the camera-based system in rainy conditions and questioned Tesla's decision against using LiDAR: “Why did Tesla decide not to use any LiDAR?” He acknowledged positives, however, stating: “I still love how capable the truck is, though. No issues with traction when zipping around the fools in the rain. Such an amazing piece of technology!”

Responses from other owners were mixed. One user confirmed similar issues: “I’ve experienced this issue too with the latest update. The rain sets off several unnecessary Sentry events.” Others defended the vehicle, with one saying: “It doesn’t sound like you have a Cybertruck. I live in the mountains and have experienced really bad weather. The vehicle performs well, and the front camera is mounted inside the windshield. Your car may need service, or you might be missing something.” Trevor Scott added: “Just turn on low power mode if you need the car to preserve power. And you want Tesla to add LiDAR? Stop, you’re making me laugh.”

The incident highlights ongoing debates among Cybertruck owners about performance in inclement weather, with software adaptations suggested as a potential fix.
