The State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory has suspended the ongoing strike by primary and secondary school teachers with immediate effect. The decision follows intervention by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who approved monthly funding to address teachers' demands. Teachers have been directed to resume duties on Monday, April 27.
The suspension was announced by NUT FCT Chairman Abdullahi Shafa at a press conference on Sunday in Gwagwalada. The strike, declared on April 20, 2026, was reviewed after an emergency meeting prompted by Mr Wike’s intervention.
Shafa said the minister approved a monthly commitment of N5 billion, comprising N2 billion from FCT Internally Generated Revenue and N3 billion from the 10 per cent IGR accruing to Area Councils. This funding aims to implement the 40 per cent peculiar allowance and settle outstanding entitlements for primary school teachers.
On promotions, the minister pledged to engage the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission to remove the vacancy precondition for teacher promotions and review the 2024 promotion exercise.
The council directed all FCT primary and secondary school teachers to resume duties on Monday, April 27. Shafa added that no teacher should be victimised for participating in the strike and that the NUT would review its position if the administration fails to honour the agreement.
